Storey, you have become quite well known throughout Canada and the U.S. in a relatively short period of time for your beautiful wedding photography. Tell us how you made the decision to become a photographer.
I found myself in my thirties and home with 2 babies less than two years old and wondering if I could ever return to the corporate world. I always loved photography and I made the decision seven years ago to follow my heart and baby #3 was born: Storey Wilkins Photography!
Why did you select wedding photography as a direction as opposed to fine art, commercial or a more portrait-styled business?
I had been photographing friends and of course my loved ones for years when my
friend Kate asked me to photograph her wedding day. It was remarkable to me that
on that day my path was clear. You could say I had a moment of clarity. It's
been said that you either love photographing weddings or hate it. For me, I will
never forget that adrenaline rush I felt that day. During that first wedding
which was a cottage wedding, I was barefoot in the lake, climbing on the roof
to get a group shot, and I remember thinking how great this was.
How have you separated yourself from your competition?
Attitude and work ethic. I believe that photographing a wedding is an honor
of the highest order in our profession. It represents Day One of a new family,
the birth of a new family. I think my clients recognize that I value the importance
of the day and that the photography should revolve around the wedding, not the
other way around. I work very hard at creating consistently natural, thoughtful,
and emotional photographs.
Do you have any message to new or young photographers breaking into the business?
Don't be lazy and expect the glory to come easily without putting in the effort.
To photograph a wedding beautifully is not easy. It's hard work, exceptionally
hard work in fact, and you must be willing to make the effort if you truly want
to succeed. I also think it is important to join your local photo associations,
even if you don't like the type of photography they do. The networking and "life"
experiences you will learn will be vitally important to avoid common pitfalls.
Have Nik Software products factored into your "look" or finished image?
Let's see. 24 weddings per year, 1500 images per wedding, 500 finals kept in
the final deck. 50% of them will require enhancement and many will require a
little "somethin somethin" to finish it. Needless to say, a rapid and
reliable production process is of key importance. I organize everything in Lightroom
then go to work in Nik products inside Lightroom. Color Efex Pro and Silver Efex
Pro are my two main products I tend to use the most. Overall, the Nik Software
products are a critical part of my workflow and the one "fun" part of my post-production
saving me lots of time and boosting my creativity.
Congratulations, Storey on your well deserved success and your beautiful
work.
