Product Planning and Your Involvement

By Tony L. Corbell
Senior Manager of Product Education and Planning

Every day we receive calls and e-mails from photographers like you from all over the country. The questions range from tips and techniques for getting the most out of our products, recommendations for photographers with whom to study, and often input on what new products and features we should consider offering. Your involvement in new product development is important to us and we have found many customer suggestions to be very inspiring. Many of the features and functionality found in Dfine 2.0 came from Nik customers just like you.

dfine 2.0 interfaceThe newly re-designed User Interface (UI) found in Dfine 2.0 represents a major shift in the look and feel of a Nik Software product. The UI offers numerous time saving features as well as a fully re-sizable preview window, for which our customers have been asking.

We have also responded to the request of providing video and written lessons on using our various products.  Please visit the Learn section of our website for videos, tips and lessons.  This is an area you can expect to see continually grow as we expand to include not only basic, but also intermediate and advanced product training for our product line.

The tremendous success and growth of Nik Software is based on your recognizing our efforts to make post capture image editing and using Photoshop simpler and easier and for that we say thank you. It is with this in mind that we will continue to develop products that are in line with our corporate mission statement which guides us to make photography better and easier for everyone through software.

Tech Tips

Adding Contrast to Your Images

pro contrastOne of the most popular filters used by professional photographers is the Pro Contrast filter found in Nik Color Efex Pro™ 2.0. This seemingly simple tool is a powerful aid in helping photographers to optimize the contrast of their images as well as correcting slightly warm or cool color casts. However, here are a few additional things to keep in mind while using this highly useful filter.

Digital photography differs from film photography in many ways. One is that digital photographs often seem flat in contrast and color saturation. The Pro Contrast filter can offer just the right touch in order to make images more vibrant or dramatic.

To begin, select the Pro Contrast in the Filter drop down menu in Photoshop or in the Nik Color Efex Pro 2.0 Selective Tool Palette after you’ve opened an image. Once the selected image is in the Pro Contrast Preview Window, the Pro Contrast filter will enhance color and contrast automatically, based on the details found in that image. By simply clicking OK, you can remove any identified color cast the filter found in the image as well as increase contrast to ensure a dynamic image with full use of the available tonal range. This not only offers an easy and elegant solution, but also a fast, easy way to work within Photoshop.

To apply your settings, click Fill and OK to apply to the entire image area. For selective filter application click Paint. Brush the effect exactly where you want it, and then click OK to apply. For more go to www.niksoftware.com/learn. Download a Free Trial or Buy today.

The Basics of Nik Sharpener Pro™ 2.0

shp inkjetTop professionals agree that Nik Sharpener Pro 2.0 is one of the most useful products available for digital photographers. Nik Sharpener Pro 2.0 was designed to optimize detail of any given image based entirely on what you, the photographer, will do with the image and eliminate guesswork.

After opening the selected image in Photoshop and selecting Nik Sharpener Pro 2.0 from the filter drop down menu or from the Nik Sharpener Pro 2.0   Selective Palette, select the type of output to be used. For example, if you are going to print a large wall portrait on an Epson Ink Jet printer, select Ink Jet: Epson from the menu. The size sliders will automatically adjust to the parameters set by your image editing application. By leaving the viewing distance option to the auto setting, sharpening will be adjusted to match the appropriate amount needed for a typical viewing distance based on the size of the image. You can however override this setting by selecting an alternative viewing distance. Next, select the type of paper to be used for the print. Click OK to process the image using the settings you set up within the filter interface and Nik Sharpener Pro will automatically optimize detail throughout the image.

When using the Nik Sharpener Pro 2.0 Selective tool, apply your settings to the entire image by clicking Fill and OK to apply to the entire image area. For selective sharpening click Paint. Brush the effect exactly where you want it, and then click OK to apply. For more information go to www.niksoftware.com/learn. Download a Free Trial or Buy today.
